Issue: This Thursday, March 1st, there will be a hearing to discuss SB1048 (SARA), in the MD Senate Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee (Gail Bates of District 9 sits on this committee.)
Significance of Action: (SARA) – currently, when Marylanders interact with covered agencies (Motor Vehicle Administration, Maryland Health Benefit Exchange, local departments of social services, etc.) they must go through a separate step to re-input their data in order to register to vote. This bill will streamline that process and change it from an “opt-in” process to an “opt-out” process. So, when Marylanders interact with these agencies, instead of needing to take extra steps to opt-in if they want to register to vote, eligible voters will specifically have to opt-out of being automatically registered to vote. Supporting this bill will make voter registration faster, more secure and easier than ever. Many states already have similar laws, including Alaska, Oregon, California, Colorado, Illinois, West Virginia, Georgia, Vermont, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
How: Please take a few minutes during the day on Wednesday to call your state senator and ask them to support SB1048 – Secure and Accessible Registration Act (SARA), which is being considered during the current legislative session and will be discussed during the Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs (EHE) Committee Hearing on Thursday, March 1.
